Things to do in Marong

Marong is a lovely little rural township on the Calder Highway, 13 km west of Bendigo, set along the scenic Bullock Creek. 

The town is home to several great parks, and some fascinating historic machinery on display. It's a great place to visit while exploring the Bendigo area, or to spend a quiet weekend away.

Malone Park Playground, Picnic and Sports Grounds, Marong


Malone Park is a beautiful public space in the heart of Marong which features extensive sports facilities, a children's playground, a modern picnic area, a scenic creek, a historic railway bridge, and plenty of grassy areas for recreation and relaxation.

Bullock Creek is a stunning feature of the park, lined with lush ornamental trees and providing plenty of quiet spots to sit and relax. During winter and spring, the banks of the creek are covered with a sea of pretty clovers.

Historic Ploughs, Marong


Two interesting historic ploughs stand on display in the centre of Marong, situated between the two sides of Marong-Serpentine Road on a large dividing strip. 

These ploughs were used locally in the early 20th century, and were donated to the Marong Shire in 1990.

Bullock Campground, Marong


This basic bush campground is set at an old distillery site in the bushland off Bullock Road, between Lockwood and Marong. 

Several features of the old distillery are still present, including brick ruins and multiple vats. 

The campground is located right beneath the small and scenic Green Gully Reservoir, where visitors can enjoy bushwalking and birdwatching. Several old wooden picnic tables and informal fire pits are scattered through a clear, gravel area.

Playground and Pioneer Memorial, Marong


This small playground is located along High Street, Marong and features a wave slide, a basket swing and a bench seat. 

There's a pioneer memorial alongside the play area, which consists of a wishing well and two stone cairns.

Marong Cemetery


The small Marong Cemetery is an interesting place to wander through, as it is the final resting place of Richard Oates - co finder of the world's largest alluvial gold nugget, the Welcome Stranger
