There are plenty of fantastic fishing spots throughout the Victorian Goldfields!
We've gathered together a few of the best in the region to help inspire your next fishing adventure.
Lake Eppalock, Eppalock VIC
Lake Eppalock is located about half an hour from Bendigo VIC
Fishing is a popular activity at Lake Eppalock, and there are plenty of great places along the shore to set up your fishing rods.
Lake Eppalock boasts a healthy supply of Golden Perch, Red Fin, Trout and Murray Cod. Red Fin is typically found in the Derrinal and Kimbolton pools (in the north sections of the lake) and Murray Cod and Golden Perch is typically found in the mouths of the Coliban and Campaspe Rivers. (source)
There are lots of fantastic visitor facilities at various locations around Lake Eppalock including multiple picnic areas with electric barbecues, public boat ramps, several public toilet blocks, and a kiosk.
Camping facilities are provided in multiple caravan parks around Lake Eppalock. Please note that free camping is not permitted around the reservoir.
Lake Eppalock is an extremely popular destination for boating and water sports.
There are five public boat ramps located around Lake Eppalock, two of them also provide picnic/barbecue facilities.
- Kimbolton Recreation Area (undercover barbecues and picnic tables, toilets, information signs)
- Moorabbee Foreshore Reserve (barbecues and picnic tables, toilets)
- Boat ramp off Sunset Drive (no other facilities)
- Kirrang Point Boat Ramp (toilets)
- Point King Bay Boat Ramp (no other facilities)
Cairn Curran Reservoir, Baringhup VIC
One of the many great spots along the shore of Cairn Curran
Fishing is one of the most popular activities at Cairn Curran. Late spring and early summer are the best times to find Golden Perch, Brown Trout, Murray Cod and Redfin in the Reservoir's deep water.
Try using yabbies as bait on a running sinker to catch Redfin. (source)
Cairn Curran is a popular spot for a wide range of recreational activities, including: boating, both power and sail, canoeing, fishing, walking, and swimming.
There are a number of excellent spots around Cairn Curran.
Fishing spots around the Baringhup side:
- Cairn Curran Shore and Picnic Area - Excellent visitor facilities including boat ramp, undercover barecues, picnic tables and toilets.
- Cairn Curran Weir - Undercover picnic tables, toilets.
- Loddon River beneath the weir - You can walk to this spot from the Cairn Curran Weir or from a short way down the river. No visitor facilities.
Fishing spots around the Joyces Creek side:
- Picnic Point Boat Ramp - Boat ramp, undercover area
- Picnic Point Road Boat Ramp - Boat ramp, no other visitor facilities
- Joyce's Creek - Where Cairn Curran Reservoir meets Joyces Creek. No visitor facilities. Historical mineral spring steps located here.
Laanecoorie Reservoir, Laanecoorie VIC

Laanecoorie Reservoir and the adjacent Loddon River are great for fishing!
The Loddon River is home to many varieties of fish including Redfin, Trench, Goldfish and Carp.
The Reservoir is also stocked regularly with Golden Perch and occasionally with Brown Trout. Murray Cod can also be caught in shallow areas.

Popular spots around Laanecoorie include:
- Brownbill Reserve - Boat ramp, picnic tables, undercover area, toilets
- Ankers Causeway - Boat ramp, picnic tables
- Loddon River Recreation Reserve - Just beyond the weir on the Loddon River. Boat ramp, picnic tables, toilets, wood fire barbecues
- Waanyarra Bushland Reserve - Where the Loddon River joins the reservoir over the other side from the weir. Picnic tables, wood fire barbecue.
- Dann's Bridge - Further along the Loddon River, past the Waanyarra Bushland Reserve. No visitor facilities.
Jubilee Lake, Daylesford VIC
Jubilee Lake is a great family-friendly destination in Daylesford
Jubilee Lake in Daylesford, Victoria is a popular spot for swimming, fishing, birdwatching, bushwalking, and picnicking.
The lake features excellent barbecue facilities, a playground, picnic tables, walking track, mineral spring tap, kiosk, cafe and toilets.
Canoes and paddleboats are available to hire from the kiosk.
Jubilee Lake is stocked regularly with rainbow trout, making this an excellent family-friendly fishing spot.
You can also enjoy a scenic 30 minute circuit walk around the lake, and be sure to stop and sample the water at the mineral spring tap.

Tullaroop Reservoir, Majorca VIC
Stocked with golden perch, brown trout and rainbow trout, Tullaroop Reservoir is a fantastic fishing destination where water access by electric/sail/paddle boats is permitted.
There is a boat ramp at the main picnic area, and many other great fishing spots along the shore.
Notable fishing spots include:
- Tullaroop Reservoir Picnic Area - Boat ramp (electric motors only), picnic tables, wood fire barbecue, toilets, fishing along the shore is great, particularly under the bridge.
- Bucknall Church Road - bush area along the shore of the reservoir. No visitor facilities.
- Rodborough School Island - seasonal access depending on water levels. No visitor facilities.
Green Hill Lake, Ararat VIC
Green Hill Lake near Ararat
Green Hill Lake is located 4km east of Ararat and is a fantastic free area for recreation, camping, fishing, boating, swimming, barbecues and bushwalking.
Facilities here include: boat ramp, toilets, showers, electric barbecues, campground, and walking tracks.
The lake is well stocked with Trout and is popular for fishing. The boat ramp is located between the playground and the campground.

Barkers Creek Reservoir, Harcourt North VIC
The scenic Barkers Creek Reservoir
Barkers Creek Reservoir is a scenic spot for fishing, canoeing, kayaking, walking, and birdwatching.
Bench seats offer views out over the water and you can walk around the reservoir or along the dam wall to the spillway.
A fenced area displays relics from the reservoir's original water control system.
According to an information sign at the reservoir: "The Victorian Government wants you to enjoy our water resources, by providing access for kayaks and boats with electric motors to several new waters throughout Victoria. We're also stocking a record number of Murray cod, golden perch and brown trout, so there's more fish for families to catch".

Lake Victoria, Maryborough VIC
Maryborough's beautiful Lake Victoria
This gorgeous ornamental lake in Maryborough is celebrated for its resident swans, beautifully forested islands, scenic walking track and excellent visitor facilities.
Lake Victoria is a great fishing destination, and has been stocked with Golden Perch in Feb 2020.
Facilities include: Toilets, playground, undercover barbecue areas, bench seating around the lake, walking track, and a fishing platform/board walk.

St Georges Lake, Creswick VIC
Gorgeous views over St George's Lake
St Georges Lake is a local favourite for swimming, fishing, walking and photography.
Once a mining dam known as "Govvy Dam", the lake has been developed into a picturesque haven for relaxation and recreation.
The main picnic area features free electric barbecue facilities, picnic tables, bench seating, grassy lawns, toilets and a walking track. There is another basic picnic area further around the lake to the right.
St George's Lake is home to Redfin and Rainbow Trout, and makes a fantastic fishing destination.
